The Midnight Hour

stories

The two floor row house, though it had 2 bedrooms, a drawing room, a dining area and a kitchen, sometimes still seemed small for the two sisters. Akshaya looked at the clock in her bedroom again. It was now 15 minutes to midnight. She clicked her tongue impatiently as she wondered why Shruti had not yet returned home. It was not like her. She had not called and when Akshaya tried her number, the pleasant voice had informed her, "This number is switched off. Please try after some time." She switched of the television and dialled Shruti's number again. "This number is switched off. Please........". Exasperated she threw the phone and got up to look for Shruti's dairy. She decided to call all her friends again. Maybe she's contacted them now, after all it was an hour since she'd made the previous calls.
stories
Akhshaya put the book down on the table, as she heard a sound from below. Something like a dull metal clang. From the kitchen perhaps. Maybe she's home after all, Akshaya thought, and started towards the door, full of anger and indignation.

As she opened the door, she was surprised to find the house suddenly plunge into darkness. Instinctively she took a step back, closed the door and ran to the window. There seemed to be light in all the neighbouring homes. 'Oh Hell!', she thought, 'This is the last straw', and turned towards the door.

She stopped and her heart skipped a beat, as she heard footsteps on the stairs. These were not Shruti's footsteps at all! These were heavy and soft stealing upwards slowly. She was not expecting anyone. And what the hell, the front door was supposed to be closed. She'd closed it herself.

Then it struck her with a sickening thud in the heart....there was a stranger in the house!!........and he'd put off the lights!!!
